About the Artist
I spent most of my life in the rural upper Midwest, and was always fascinated with natural patterns, shapes and colors, and the play of light. While this has been a lifelong interest, like so many people my involvement in the arts was interrupted by the demands of a professional career.
In 1999 my wife and I sailed south from Wisconsin to the Caribbean aboard our sailboat. After travelling the Caribbean for several years, we moved ashore on the beautiful island of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. The colors and quality of light in the Caribbean are inspiring, and my interest in capturing some of this magic blossomed. In 2011 we returned to the mainland, settling in Sarasota on Florida's west coast. Each place has its own colors, light and subjects of interest - and its own kind of magic. While organic natural forms provide the raw material for many of my images, the real subject of my work is the multiple and often conflicting perceptions we have of our environment and our place in it. Creating this work has helped me remain mindful that there are mysteries in the world, and that things are not only as they first appear. Above all, I hope my work encourages a sense of enchantment with the natural world and with each other. |
