About the Artist

I spent most of my life in the rural upper Midwest, and was always fascinated with natural patterns, shapes and colors, and the play of light. I began taking photographs with my first camera at 12.

Like so many people, my involvement in the arts was interrupted by the demands of a professional career. Still, I maintained a keen interest in art, collected favorite works of artist friends, and continued to dabble in photography. In 1999 I ended that career and, with my wife, sailed south from Wisconsin to the Caribbean aboard our sailboat.

After travelling the Caribbean for several years, we moved ashore on the beautiful island of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. The colors and quality of light here in the Caribbean are inspiring, and my interest in capturing some of this magic has blossomed.

While organic natural forms provide much of the raw material for my images, the real subject of my work is the multiple and often conflicting perceptions we have of our environment and our place in it. While my images are usually colorful and pleasant to look at, each also has some ambiguity that may challenge the viewer. Creating this work has helped me remain mindful that there are mysteries in the world, and that things are not only as they first appear.
